I’ve just arrived at the NEC in Birmingham to begin rehearsals for Gadget Show Live 2015.
I’ve worked with the Gadget Show Live team since 2012 and I’m thrilled to be back! This year I’m literally all over the show, presenting a feature on Top Smartphones and Tablets of 2015 with John Mason, as well as fronting my own Wear Next for Wearable Tech (see what I did there?) show.
Here’s a sneak peek of the impressive Gadget Show Live Connect Theatre where I’ll be doing a couple of my live shows:
On top of that I’m hosting the Gadget Show Live British Inventors’ Project 2015 awards where I’m very much looking forward to interviewing last year’s runner-up Ed Ward from Veglo.
The Innovation Theatre, where the British Inventors’ Project shows take place every day, was a real highlight of last year’s Gadget Show Live so I’m excited to be back getting under the skin of inventors and seeing what makes them and their inventions tick.
The Gadget Show Live runs from Tuesday 7th April 2015 for press and trade, and then from Wednesday 8th April to Sunday 12th April 2015 for public. More info and ticket from the Gadget Show Live website.
At the Gadget Show Live 2014 I will be hosting the British Invention of the Year event at the Innovation Theatre, an all-new feature for this year showcasing innovation, invention and the entrepreneur.
On Tuesday 8th April – press day at the Gadget Show Live – I’m hosting the awards event where the GSL British Invention of the Year will be announced.
From Wednesday 9th to Sunday 13th of April I’ll then be presenting two different live shows throughout the Gadget Show Live public days:
The British Inventors’ Project celebrates the UK innovation and startup scene. Having an idea is one thing – a very special thing – but having the meat to go to market with it and convince others to buy in to it is quite something else. Welcome to the world of the inventor. Featuring interviews with inventors and demonstrations of products ranging from wholly indispensable to the slightly strange, this show is a celebration of the very best of British invention.
The Future Tech Project is your chance to see the future before it hits the shelves! Live on the Innovation Theatre stage we’ll be getting a glimpse at the technology that will make a difference to the way we live our lives, showcasing everything from affordable 3D food printers to solar-powered racing cars.
The Innovation Theatre, in partnership with Wired, runs from 9th to 13th April 2014 in Hall 6 of the Gadget Show Live at the NEC Birmingham. Click here to find out more and book tickets for the Gadget Show Live.
Nikki Dean is familiar to many as host of Strictly Come Dancing for BBC online or as regular gadget girl on Something for the Weekend.
However, it was in her alter-ego as a Brand Detective that I caught up with her last month at the Gadget Show Live London at Earl’s Court.
The Brand Detective is a leading gadgets and technology blog run by Nikki and her fellow detective Kelly Allen.

I’m delighted to be back with the Gadget Show Live once again this week at the NEC in Birmingham.
As well as hosting the TechRadar Showcase Stage here I’m presenting my very own show on the Photography Stage all about the best apps and accessories for creative photography and videography using smartphones.
If you’ve come here looking for the notes for my show then click here for a full run down of the smartphone photography and filmmaking apps and accessories I showcased.
Of course, smartphone creativity is something I’ve written about and presented on a lot over the last 12 months, and I’m very excited to have the chance to talk about it here at the Gadget Show Live, as well as to show off my filming accessories workflow.
As if all that wasn’t enough, I’ve also been filming my new future tech trends show, Fast Forward, for O2 Guru TV – more on that coming very soon…
At the Gadget Show Live Christmas 2012 I showed CNN’s Erin McLaughlin around some the coolest gadget gifts for this holiday season. Here’s what we found:
One of the items that featured in this report and also in my World’s Coolest Camera show at The HUB Theatre is the BubbleScope. I’m a particular fan of the immersive and interactive 360 degree video, a cool way to capture a moment.
Here’s an example of an of a ‘bubble’ in action – at first it looks like any other web video, until you realise you can drag to change your camera angle:
In the midst of hosting The HUB Theatre at the Gadget Show Live @ Christmas in London last week I was asked to appear in a Channel 4 News report celebrating the 20th anniversary of the first ever SMS.
Some random SMS facts and figures I pulled up in my research:
- Telenotes – the original name for SMS messages
- 200 – the number of SMS messages sent per month by the average UK mobile phone owner.
- 150 billion – SMS messages sent in the UK during 2011
- 7 trillion – messages sent worldwide every year
- 200,000 – messages sent every second
(sources: Ofcom Annual Communications Report, July 2012; International Telecommunications Union)
As I discuss in the report with Asha Tanna, it appears as though SMS volumes in the UK are for the first time beginning to waver, due largely to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and messaging services such as iMessage, BBM and Whatsapp. Globally the SMS trend is still one of growth.
The Gadget Show Live comes to London this Christmas and I’m really excited to be the host for one of the show’s main attractions, The HUB Theatre.
Showcasing this year’s coolest technology, The HUB Theatre promises an action-packed programme of events and expert advice from those in the know. We’ll see the TechRadar team exploring mobile phones past, present and future, Toyology will be taking a look at this year’s newest craze, ‘Apptoys’, and Trusted Reviews will be sharing their top picks for gadget gifts this Christmas.
Elsewhere The Gadget Show Live Christmas features everything you’ve come to expect from the Channel 5 series, with a unique chance to get hands-on and experience all of the latest games, gadgets and gear. What’s more Gadget Show presenters Jason Bradbury, Pollyanna Woodward and John Bentley are appearing in a stunning thrill-a-minute show at the spectacular 2,700-seater Super Theatre.
